Audience research is important to media producers because the media producers need to know who to aim their movies and TV shows at so that the people that its aimed at will want to go and watch them. Media producers need to find out certain bits of information about their target audience by doing research about their target audience. The things that they need to research about is what gender, where they live, their age, their interests, if they are independent or not, do they go to school or college and do they work. When the media producers have collected all of the research that they need to do then they use their findings by using that information to give the audience what they what to see so that they will want to go and see it. For example if the media producer was making a film and wants to put a trailer of the film up then they will check their target audience so that they would out the best parts of the film on the trailer that would make their target audience want to go and see without spoiling any of the film.
Audiences are profiled by putting certain types of different audiences into different groups that can by easily identified by knowing that audience that are each group. They are put into these groups because of what they do and what they are. There is a lot of different groups that different audiences can be profiled into such as age, gender, sexual orientation, regional identity, mainstream, alternative and niche. There is also different ways that you can profile people into them groups such as socio-economic status, psycho graphics and geodemographics.
Psychographics are used to study people's personality's, their opinions, their interests, their values and their lifestyles. The audiences are profiled in psychographics by sorting out the audience into groups depending on what the audience's opinions, personality, interests, values and lifestyles are and then they are put into different groups depending on what they are.
Geodemographics are used to study specific areas that their target audiences could live in and it helps them to get more information about them certain areas. Media producers use the information that they get from their geodemoegraphics to help them to understand what would be best to show people from different areas when they are showing them something for example a trailer for a movie. The audiences are profiled in geodemographics by researching where the audiences live and any information that the media producers can find out about the area.

The audiences are profiled in socio-economic status by researching the jobs that their audiences do to find out how much they earn and research where they were educated to find out what they learned and now know.
Media producers carry out research into their audiences by doing quantitative and qualitative audience research so they will be able to know more information about their specific audiences. Quantitative research is research that is based on statistics and figures such as the program ratings and the box office figures. They get these figures by seeing how much the films have made in the cinemas around the world to get the box office figures.
